Rutile, Ilmenite and Leucoxene are major raw materials for the production of titanium dioxide metal and high quality pigments, primarily used in paint, paper and plastics.

These titaniferrous oxide minerals contain titanium dioxide along with varying proportions of iron oxide both in ferric and ferrous forms, widely used in the production of welding electrodes and in ferroalloy manufacturing.

Calcium Alginate

Product Information

Alginate dressings are highly absorptive, non-occlusive dressings made of soft, non-woven calcium alginate fibers derived from brown seaweed or kelp. Alginate dressings are available as a primary dressing in pad or rope form.

Main Applications

Calcium alginate dressings are used on moderate to heavily exudative wounds during the transition from debridement to repair phase of wound healing. Dry wounds should not be treated with these dressings because they have no hydrating properties.

Ferromanganese Powder

Ferromanganese is a ferroalloy with a high content of manganese, made by heating the oxides MnO2 and Fe2O3, combined with carbon, in either a blast or an electric furnace. The oxides undergo carbothermal reduction producing the ferromanganese powder.

Technical Details

Internationally recognized specifications for ferromanganese powder come in several grades and include standard, medium-carbon and low-carbon levels. High-quality ferromanganese powder is safe to use and ensures high stability during the various lavoration processes. 

Main Applications

Ferro Manganese is used as a deoxidizer for steel. The advantage of combining powdered iron oxide with manganese oxide results in a  lower melting point of the combined alloy compared to pure manganese oxide. Product Information

Ilmenite is a non-fluorescent, weakly magnetic titanium-iron oxide mineral which is iron-black or steel-grey. It is a crystalline iron titanium oxide (FeTiO3). Ilmenite is a common accessory mineral found in metamorphic and igneous rocks and concentrated in placer mines as “black sand” deposits.

Technical Details

Category: oxide minerals. Formula: iron titanium oxide, FeTiO3. Colour: Iron-black; grey with a brownish tint in reflected light. Chrystal habit: granular to massive and lamellar exsolutions in hematite or magnetite.

Main Applications

Ilmenite accounts for about 90% of the world’s consumption of titanium minerals. Most ilmenite ore production is destined for titaniferrous slag application. Ilmenite can be further processed as pig iron, as continuous cast steel billets, or as iron or steel powders, or converted into molten iron bath and slag rich in titanium dioxide.

Leucoxene is the term to use under the ore microscope for fine grained alteration products of titanium minerals, usually found to be rutile and/or anatase on more detailed examination by X-ray diffraction.

Technical Details

Category: oxide minerals. Leucoxene is observed in some igneous rocks and iron ore deposits as the result of the alteration of ilmenite, perovskite or titanite. Opaque white mineral, varies in colour from yellow to brown.

Main Applications

Leucoxene, as a titanium ore, is mainly used for the manufacturing titanium dioxide pigments, welding electrodes, welding rod-coating and ferro alloys.

Manganese Tetraoxide

Product Information

Manganese oxide is any of a variety of manganese oxides and hydroxides and is an inorganic compound with the formula MnO. This blackish or brown solid occurs naturally as the mineral pyrolusite, which is the main ore of manganese and a component of manganese nodules. The principal use for MnO2 is for dry-cell batteries, such as the alkaline battery and the zinc-carbon battery.

Main Applications

Manganese oxide is one of the most attractive inorganic materials because of its structural flexibility and wide applications in catalysis, ion exchange, electrochemical supercapacitors, molecular adsorption, biosensors, and so on.

Manganese oxide with formula Mn3O4 (haussmanite) and shows a very high colouring

Rutile is a mineral composed primarily of Titanium Dioxide, (TiO2). Rutile is the most common natural form of TiO2 and an important constituent of heavy minerals and ore deposits. Titanium dioxide pigment is the single greatest use of titanium worldwide.

Category: oxide minerals. Formula: TiO2. Colour: reddish brown, red, pale yellow, pale blue, violet, rarely grass-green, black if high in Niobium (Nb) and Tantalum (Ta). Common impurity: Fe, Nb, Ta.

Main Applications

The main uses for rutile are the manufacture of refractory ceramic, as a pigment, and for the production of Titanium metal. Rutile is widely used as a welding electrode covering. It is also used as a part of the ZTR index, which classifies highly weathered sediments.

Silico Manganese is an alloy with 65% to 68% manganese, 16% to 21% silicon, and 1.5% to 2% carbon. It is produced by smelting of slag from high-carbon Ferro Manganese or of Manganese ore with coke and a quartz flux. Smelting temperatures are high and greater energy is needed to reduce the quartz to silicon.

Main Applications
